The Business Case for Wellbeing

GLOBAL

In our global workplaces, we are experiencing an emotional recession showing up as increased levels of burnout, lower engagement, and job dissatisfaction.

The pandemic, ongoing global unrest, and an unstable economy have pushed many people and businesses to the breaking point.

The result? High rates of burnout – a state of
emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion
caused by excessive and prolonged stress.

MALAYSIA

In 2022, 58% of employees in Malaysia reported feeling burnt out. In 2024, that number has gotten worse. It has unfortunately increased to 67%.

Only 12% said they felt no sense of burnout from work.

It’s alarming to see that despite the added focus on employee wellbeing and mental health in the workplace after the pandemic, the situation has worsened rather than improved. This also reflects on cost: on a national level, the cost of mental health issues in the workplace to the economy is conservatively estimated to be RM14.46bn

GENERATIONS

Globally, burnout is surging among younger workers. Research shows a striking generational divide in emotional intelligence, a key driver of burnout.

For Malaysia, when we take a closer look at certain groups in the community however, the group with the highest rates of burnout is the Millennials.

69% of Millennials have reported feeling burnt out at work in the past 3 months, followed by 64% of Gen Zs, 61% of Gen X, and 38% of Baby Boomers.
